Boos & Bravos
BOO: Senate Bill 315 passed the Ohio Senate November 19 and now goes to the House. The bill re-. quires women 16 or under to obtain parental consent before receiving an abortion, physicians to describe fetal development to abortion-seekers, and women to wait 48 hours between their first clinic visit and the time of abortion.
BRAVO: Shelters for battered women in Cuyahoga County will receive about $140,000 this year from the $10 tax on marriage license fees, according to the Battered Women Task Force.
BRAVO: State Rep. Mary Boyle, D-14, of Cleveland Heights, recently threatened to call for the resignation of James Patrick Leahy, Executive Director of the Ohio Democratic Party, unless the party issued a statement saying where it stood on women's issues. On election night, Mr. Leahy made some crude sexual remarks about Joan Laurence, a backer of Issue 2, which was defeated. Rep. Boyle, Laurence's opponent in a debate on Issue 2, was adamant that Laurence was not the issue. The party chairperson subsequently issued a declaration condemning the incident and confirming the party's commitment to increasing the role of women in the political process. Mr. Leahy wrote an apology to Joan Laurence.
BRAVO and BOO: The Board of Trustees of United Way voted to commit $100,000 in funds to help meet current service needs of women as identified by the Task Force on Women, established by United Way in 1980. Areas targeted for solicitation of grant proposals are domestic violence projects and childcare projects. The United Way recently came under attack as a monopolistic "charity OPEC" by the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy because it denies minority-run, public interest, and advocacy non-profit organizations a fair share of the $1 billion collected through payroll deductions. The Committee, a coalition of 125 such charities, objects that more than half the $1 billion goes to 11 big groups, including the Salvation Army, Red Cross, and the Boy and Girl Scouts.
BRAVO: According to the Cleveland Abortion Rights Action League (CARAL), numerous phone

calls from pro-choicers succeeded in 'swaying some state senators to vote against Senate Bill 315. Among those successfully targeted by the calls in the Cleveland area were Senators Skall, McCormack and Jackson.
BRAVO: In an action against sexual violence, women in Ithaca, New York have posteḍ notices around the downtown area of a 10 p.m. curfew for men. City officials say they are looking for the culprits who distributed the notice, since it carries a copy of the official city seal. The posters read: "Rape is the fastest growing crime in Ithaca. Less drastic measures have been ineffective. In order to assure the safety of women and prevent further sexual violence, all men must be off city streets every night after 10:00 p.m. unless accompanied by two or more women”.
“Arthur” (continued from page 6)
played by Liza Minnelli, is a gutsy, off-beat, practical character who is appealing not only because she's a little wacky, but because she's a strong female. The character is off-beat, but the tale is twice-told: the frog turning into a prince because of the love of a good woman. We get Love At First Sight, and Weak Man Saved by Strong Woman.
Does that sound cynical? Well, I didn't get to be a feminist by living in a cocoon, sheltered from difficult adult relationships. I had to remove a few male feet from off my neck, and then learn to stand on my own two feet. But I haven't given up on romantic love. Falling in love is nice. Falling in love at first sight is unrealistic, but still nice, and I'm for keeping it in our story-telling. What I am not for is perpetuating the myth that 1) women get so blown away when they fall in love that they immediately cancel all their personal goals, and 2) that this love is the force-yea, the only force-that can solve the Other's problems. These notions are contradictory. She's so weak that she is blown off course by infatuation, but her strength will save him. It doesn't say much for either of them, does it? And yet both of these themes are so familiar in the fantasies storytellers spin for us that we incorporate them into our expectations and hopes and dreams. Feminists got so by looking reality squarely in the eye. That doesn't preclude a rich life of fantasy as expressed in a welltold story. It does preclude, however, getting fantasies so tangled with reality that one continues to build a life on myths that will inevitably disappoint.
